India celebrates Festival of Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is the festival celebrated by Hindus across the world in honour of Lord Ganesha. On this day, devotees pray to the God for prosperity and unhindered new beginnings.


Also known as 'Vinayak Chaturthi' the festival is celebrated during the Hindu month of Bhadra (mid-August to mid-September), which ends on the 14th day of the fortnight, called 'Ananta Chaturdashi'.


A celebration fever seems to grip Maharashtra and other states as the 10 day festival began. During the festival, local communities put up public pandals for mass worship, while families bring home small clay idols to pray.


When the festivities end (this year, it will culminate on September 13), the idols are immersed in a large bodies of water which is considered that Ganpati went home and next year will come back again.


Salman Khan, Govinda, Nana Patekar, Riteish Deshmukh, Tusshar Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor are among other bollywood stars who geared up to celebrate the Ganesh festival with traditional fervour.


People also spreading warmth and greeting through SMSes, WhatsApp, Facebook messages etc. Other social media platform also buzzed with several photographs and greetings, across India.
