India's Test skipper Virat Kohli has been recommended by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, one of the biggest sporting honors. Besides, his team mate Ajinkya Rahane has also been nominated for another prestigious Arjuna Award.
If Kohli achieves this prestigious award, he will be the third Indian batsman to achieve this award after Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni.
Donning the role of Test captain, Kohli has done his bit taking India to an impressive series win in Sri Lanka and the recent one being against South Africa last year at home.
The year 2016 has been Kohli’s year with his impressive skills of leading from the front and taking the team to new heights especially in T20 World Cup 2016, Asia Cup 2016 and the current one being Indian Premier League (IPL).
With regards to Kohli’s nomination, an official from sports ministry confirmed, “We have received the recommendations from the BCCI. Their names will be sent to the awards selection committee.”
As for Ajinkya Rahane, he has been consistent with his innings in recent times and achieved 100 in both innings in fourth Test against South Africa in Delhi.
Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Arjuna Arawd carries cash price of Rs 7.5 lakh Rs 5 lakh respectively and a citation.
