Sensex dipped by 66 points on Tuesday, or 0.26 percent, at 24,900. Nifty closed at 7,597, falls 18 points, or 0.24 percent.
Investor sentiment was weighed down on profit booking by domestic institutional investors. DIIs pulled out Rs 2,494 crore from the market on Monday.
Crude oil prices fall in London and New York, which also reduced sentiments, causing a gap-up start in European markets.
Prospects from RBIs first monetary policy meet in coming days also weighed on investors' moves, where central bank may cut key interest rate by 25 basis points.
Market ended that day on a feeble note after a range bound session.
BSE smallcap and indices closed with losses of 0.27 percent and 0.21, respectively.
BSE Healthcare was the top loser, down 2.7 per cent. Sun Pharma and Lupin contributed most to the losses seen on the index.
