The apex court issued notice to the three lawyers, who assaulted JNU students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar and sought their response asking why the contempt proceeding should not be instigated against them.

The court made this observation after hearing a petition seeking contempt action against three lawyers accused of beating Kanhaiya and others at the Patiala House Court complex in national capital recently.

It had on Thursday agreed to hear the matter after lawyer Prashant Bhushan sought an urgent hearing on the plea filed by another advocate.

The appeal, which was filed in the on Wednesday in the court, sought suo motu contempt proceedings against lawyers Vikram Singh Chauhan, Yashpal Singh and Om Sharma on the ground that they have allegedly been talking about the attacks, which was caught on camera.
