The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday witnessed uproar over recent suicide of Hyderabad University PhD scholar Rohith Vemula.
The issue was raised by Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati. She demanded government's response to allegations that Vemula, a Dalit, was persecuted and two ministers had a role in it.
Rohith was among the five research scholars suspended by the university last year over an alleged assault case.
The incident took a political turn with accusations that the extreme step taken by Rohith was a result of discrimination against Dalit students at the behest of Union Minister Labour Bandaru Dattatreya, after his letter to Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani, seeking action against their 'anti-national acts'.
