Bhumata brigade activist Trupti Desai was detained by the police while she was leading a group of women to the Shani Shingnapur Temple in Ahmedabad on Monday.

She is leading a movement to break the gender barrier at the temple in Maharashtra, where women are not allowed to enter the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine.

Temple authorities and the locals are strongly opposing them as they feel the practice of not allowing women is followed from centuries.

In an attempt to end the deadlock over the issue, the Ahmednagar District Administration had called for a meeting between protestors and the temple management few days back to discuss ban on female devotees entering the shrine's sanctum sanctorum.

In January, Desai and other activists of the brigade were stopped from marching towards the temple by police near Supa. They were also detained by police before being released.

In November last a year, a woman had offered prayers at the temple in "breach" of age-old practice, after which seven securitymen were suspended.
