Almost a month after after he was ordered by the Supreme Court to step down as Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Kalikho Pul allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday.
The 47-year old was found hanging in the Chief Minister's official residence in Itanagar, which he was yet to vacate because his home was being renovated.
In July, the apex court removed the then government in power and ordered that the state be restored to the charge of the Congress.
Pul was with the Congress till late last year when he rebelled along with a section of MLAs from the party in February, he became Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh with support of the BJP.
The Supreme Court found that appointment as illegal . It ruled that the north eastern state had been unjustifiably placed under direct rule by the Centre.
Congress was vindicated in its accusation that the NDA Government at the Centre had misused its power to remove an Opposition led government.
However, to win back its rebels, the Congress decided not to reinstall Nabam Tuki as Chief Minister.
Instead, it selected Pema Khandu, who was agreeable to the Congress dissidents.
