Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed passed away on Thursday at AIIMS in New Delhi after a brief illness.
Mufti was flown to AIIMS on December 24 with complaints of neck pain and fever.
Mufti breathed his last around 7.30 in the morning and his body was flown to Srinagar in Indian Air Force’s C1 30 plane at 11 :30 am.
The body shall be taken to Mufti’s Fairview residence at Gupkar where from it will be taken to Bijbehara (south Kashmir) his hometown for last rites. Home Minister Rajnath Singh will also attend the funeral.
The demise has been widely condoled across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to J&K CM at Palam Airport Delhi. Former chief minister Omar Abdullah also rushed to AIIMS, early Thursday.
Meanwhile, the state government has declared seven-day mourning.
The state shall mourn the death of Mufti Sayeed for seven days and there will be a holiday today, said a government order issued by Commissioner Secretary, GAD.
Sayeed, 79, is survived by his wife, three daughters including PDP President Mehbooba Mufti, and a son.
