Indian National Congress defeated BJP in the Ratlam (ST) Lok Sabha constituency by-polls on Tuesday in a high-stakes battle that had captured the nation’s attention after the BJP’s defeat in Bihar.
The tribal constituency was won by the BJP’s Dilip Singh Bhuria for the first time ever in 2014.
The veteran Congress leader Kantilal Bhuria had lost by a margin of more than one lakh votes to Dilip Singh Bhuria last year; the death of Dilip Singh Bhuria on June 24 necessitated the by-election which led to Kantilal Bhuria’s comeback .
Kantilal Bhuria, the former state unit president , was pitted against Nirmala Bhuria, daughter of Dilip Singh Bhuria.
The victory of Congress is seen as a setback to BJP in the wake of 'Vyapam scam' that has already tarnished the image of Shiv Raj Singh Chouhan government..The defeat is also considered to be wake up call for the BJP as the chief minister himself campaigned in the poll bound constituency.
