Govt tables bill to give statutory status to Aadhaar

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley introduced the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Bill, 2016, in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

The bill was tabled in the House as a money bill.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, raised his objections to the bill being introduced as a money bill.

He said the Congress is ready to cooperate on the bill, but stressed that it should not come as a money bill.

In his response, Jaitley said the bill is considerably different from what the Opposition is talking about.

Bill seeks to provide good governance, transparent, targeted delivery of subsidies, benefits and services the expenditure for which is sustained from the Consolidated Fund of India to individuals residing in India through unique identity numbers.
