India complains against US on renewable energy to WTO

The Centre as complaint against the subsidy given by eight US states in renewable energy under American domestic content requirements in World Trade Organisation, the Commerce Ministry has  said.

"India has requested consultations with the US under the dispute settlement system regarding alleged domestic content requirements and subsidies provided by eight US states in the renewable energy sector," the WTO earlier said in a statement in Geneva.

The eight US states are - Washington, Montana, CaliforniaConnecticut, Michigan, , Massachusetts, Delaware and Minnesota.

Government’s complaint is on the grounds that subsidies are not consistent with world trade standards because they provide less favourable treatment to imported products.

As per WTO norms, if consultations fail to sort out the dispute within 60 days, the complainant may request settlement by a panel.

In 2013, The US had complaint against India before the WTO  alleging violation of global trading norms.
