Lucknow and Warangal are in top list of 13 winners of the 'Fast Track SmartCity Competition' announced by Union Urban Development minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday.

Others are - Dharamshala, Chandigarh, Raipur, New Town Kolkata, Bhagalpur, Panaji, Port Blair, Imphal, Ranchi, Agartalaa and Faridabad.

The 20 cities selected were selected under the scheme in January were Bhubaneswar, Pune, Jaipur, Surat, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Jabalpur, Visakhapatnam, Solapur, Davangere, Indore, the New Delhi area, Coimbatore, Kakinada, Belgaum, Udaipur, Guwahati, Chennai, Ludhiana and Bhopal.

Names were picked from a list of 97 cities submitted by states during a competition in 2015.

Selections were done on service levels, infrastructure and track record. More than 2.5 million citizens weighed in on which urban problems needed to be solved first.

To qualify, states and local administrations had to give "smart answers" to a template with 43 questions.

Cities which could not make it in the first round were asked to focus on arrears and prepare for a fast-track screening for round 2 of announcements.

In December last year, 97 selected cities submitted their plans to Urban development ministry and were given Rs.2 crore each.

PM Modi has promised to create 100 new smart cities by 2022 that will have e-governance, internet connectivity along with quality infrastructure such as waste management and efficient public transport.

Selections for remaining cities will begin in September this year.
