SC dismisses appeal for body other than Collegium

The Supreme Court rejected an appeal seeking setting up of a body independent of the Collegium to select judges to the top and the high courts.

Petition sought setting up of a body independent of executive and judiciary to select judges these courts.

The  body would amount to amending the Constitution and it cannot do that, apex court said.

National Campaign for Lawyers (NCL) alleged that and independent judge selection body is required to end control of the judiciary by a section of elites.

It also said that the appointment to judicial positions, of family members of sitting judges and senior advocates must discontinue.
