Urjit Patel to succeed Raghuram Rajan as RBI governor

 The government has  named economist and banker Urjit R. Patel as the next Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to succeed Raghuram R. Rajan.

 
Deputy governor since January 2013, 52-year old Patel will take over as central bank chief on September 4.
 
Rajan had announced in June that he would step down in September and return to academia after his stint at the RBI.
 
Patel headed a panel that recommended landmark changes to monetary policy in the country.
