The Uttar Pradesh assembly elections are due for February-March next year. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi could together initiate the party's campaign for the upcoming polls at a workers' meeting in Lucknow next month.
"The top leadership will meet in Delhi to shape the campaign plans. In the meeting Priyanka's role will also be discussed," a source from Patry said. It is known that Congress workers have been pushing for a formal role for Priyanka in the Uttar Pradesh elections.
So far Priyanka only campaigned in family constituencies of Rae Bareli and Amethi which are owned by her mother Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi - respectively.
Rahul had to address a workers' meeting in Lucknow in June, but it was postponed that time as the party looks to define a clear role for Priyanka and UP Congress was also searching for a Brahmin chief face as their strategy for the polls.
After the Lucknow launch, likely around August 12, Congress will begin its campaign in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's parliamentary constituency Varanasi. Congress won only 28 of the 355 seats it contested in the 2012 UP assembly elections.
