Intake of citrus fruits may prevent harmful effects of obesity such as diabetes, says a study

Orange juice, lemonades and other citrus fruit drinks serve as everyone’s first choice in roasting summers. True enough. 
Interestingly, apart from hydrating people, these fruit juices also provide amazing health benefits. 
According to study conducted by Universidade Estadul Paulista (UNESP) Brazil, as these fruits contain
flavonoids, a type of antioxidants, higher intake of citrus fruits may prevent harmful effects of obesity such as heart disease, liver disease as well as diabetes. 
The study conducted on 50 mice, focused on the functioning of flavanones such as hesperidin, eriocitrin and eriodictyol, abundantly found in oranges, lemons and other citrus fruits.
To conduct the study, these mice were separated into two different groups. Both the groups were fed high fat food for a month with difference of only one group consuming citrus fruits.
Results of the study showed that the group who consumed high-fat diet without citrus diet, showed increase in the levels of cell-damage markers called thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) by 80 per cent in the blood and 57 per cent in the liver compared to the mice of other group.
In the group that consumed standard citrus diet with other foods, however, there was no sign of weight loss but hesperidin, eriocitrin and eriodictyol were found to decrease the TBARS levels in the liver by 50 per cent, 57 per cent and 64 per cent, respectively. 
Also, eriocitrin and eriodictyol reduced TBARS levels in the blood by 48 per cent and 47 per cent, respectively.
Fat leads to non-functioning of various organs in human beings as it produces  excessive reactive oxygen species, which can damage cells in a process called oxidative stress.
