Sonowal tightens measures against rhinos’ poaching

In order to safeguard the one-horned rhinos against poaching, Assam’s Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal asked the Deputy Commissioners as well as Superintendents of Police to make every effort possible.

The order was given in a meeting held between the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police of Jorhat, Golaghat and Nagaon districts that encircle the National Park at Kaziranga.

The decision is taken, taking into the account the killing of about nine one-horned rhinos in the park this year.

Sonowal said that whatever measures are needed to be undertaken will be adopted for protecting the rhinos and Kaziranga National Park, the World Heritage site.

To make the effort successful, the state government has also made a major reshuffle in the ranks of park authorities and brought at least four new officers, including one Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF), one Forest Ranger and two Deputy Conservator of Forest.

Also the locals have been asked to remain alert against poachers and also to identify the culprits by the CM.

The government has already taken an action against the Director of the Kaziranga National Park for concealing the fact of poaching from Assam Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma. The government has suspended him.
