National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is planning to conduct a National Achievement Survey (NAS) for the students studying in classes I to VIII in Chandigarh to check the learning levels of the children according to the learning outcomes developed.
It is believed that that the survey will help in improving the teaching provided and learning received in the schools.
In the survey for the classes I and II, learning and understanding of the students of mainly two subjects language and mathematics will be tested for which 20 questions will be put forward by the class teacher to each student individually, and randomly from the pool of items measuring specified learning outcomes of both the subjects.
Similarly for the classes III and IV, language will be checked on the basis of reading comprehension only.
Apart from language, students will be tested on the basis of mathematics and environmental studies.
There will be a single test booklet and it will contain a total of 45 multiple-choice items, 15 from each subject with four alternatives.
Finally, for the students of classes V to VIII, language, mathematics, science and social science will be considered.
To conduct the test of V to VIII, three monitoring teams from the local Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) unit will be constituted to observe the activities at the district, block and school level.
Besides test, the learning gaps will also be identified at the school level to provide feedback to students and schools.
