The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are planning to admit up to 1 lakh of students by 2020.
For this, the IIT council is looking into a proposal that would allow 30,000 non-resident students to pursue engineering courses in next three years. The proposal is set to be discussed on August 23.
Presently, there are around 72000 students studying in IITs. The students belong to their undergraduate, post graduate and doctorate courses.
As per IIT plans, around 10,000 students will be admitted every year till it touches 1 lakh by 2020.
According to the institution, the increase will be without compromising on the teaching process and would be subject to availability of adequate teaching facilities.
Also, IITs aim towards campus recruitment of PhD students from IITs with an eye to fill up vacancies.
