Sensex surged as much as 491 points to top the 24,000 mark on Wednesday, as top domestic lenders helped extend the post-Budget rally in equities for the second consecutive.
At least five Sensex stocks gained in the day. Apart from SBI and ICICI Bank, Adani Ports, Hero Moto Corp and BHEL were among the top five gainers.
SBI rallied over 11 percent to Rs 181, while ICICI Bank gained by 7 percent to Rs 219 and Axis Bank 4 percent to Rs 407 after the RBI eased norms on tier-I capital.
Nifty closed at 7,368.85, rises 146.55 points or 2.03 percent. Along with ICICI Bank and SBI, Bank of Baroda and PNB were the top gainers in the Nifty.
Sensex touched the high of 24,280.42 and a low of 24,043.89 during the day.
