The Centre is planning to increase the use of natural gas by increasing the city gas distribution network, Union oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said.

At a launch in the national capital, he sought cooperation from municipal bodies and states in setting up networks for piping the fuel to households.

He held a meeting with senior officials and representatives from 20 cities to discuss strategies to increase gas use.

The oil minister said gas had a 6.5 percent share in the country's energy basket and the government was working on measures to raise this.

He said GAIL had completed the offering process for the national gas grid and laying of pipelines would start soon.
