As Raghuram Rajan will be leaving the post of Governor of Reserve Bank of India, Arvind Panagariya, who is presently the policy adviser to PM Narendra Modi is likely to take up the post.
Although PMO has denied any statement on the issue, many media reports claim tis to be the case.
Panagariya leads the main economic advisory body of the government and is also India’s group of 20 summit negotiator.
Apart from this, he is also the Vice Chairman of Niti Aayog of India.
A word about Arvind Panagariya; he is an Indo-American economist and also Professor of economics at Columbia University.
He was also Chief Economist at Asian Development Bank.
While Arvind Panagariya is seen to be the next RBI Governor, former deputy governors of RBI, Subir Gokarn and Rakesh Mohan serve as his competitors.
Apart from them, SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya, Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das, Government's Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian and the RBI's current Deputy Governor Urjit Patel are ome other names in the race.
