Every year sugarcane farmers with all their resources and hardwork cultivate sugarcane and the harvest is delivered to sugar mills for making sugar and other sugary products from it. But there are several sugar mills that do not clear the payments of some farmers.
As a result, Parliament has been informed that sugar mills owed Rs 6,598 crore to cane farmers at the end of last month.
Out of this, amount of Rs 5368 crores pending belongs to 2015-16 marketing year, Rs 577 crores belong to 2014-15 and Rs 653 crores belong to 2013-14.
Payments due were maximum in Uttar Pradesh where Rs 2,877 crores come out to be pending and is closely followed by Tamil Nadu. Sugar Mills in Tamil Nadu owed Rs 1,030 crores.
This is not it and in Maharashtra which happens to be the major cane producing state, the dues were around Rs 411 crores. In Punjab, the amount was Rs 226 crores, in Uttarakhand Rs 209 crores, in Gujarat Rs 203 crores and in Haryana Rs 126 crores.
Apart from these states, Karnataka mills owed Rs 108 crores.
